The infamous Yabitu Koba has lit up all cupping bowls and brewing vessels this year. The Koba community has had a Landmark year for quality and complexity. This lot is not only clean, it is complex with numerous, wildly satisfying & interesting notations. In the cup we get notes of boysenberry, sweet-puckery citrus, and flowers for days. This coffee is bright with a light body and legato runs of major berry chords. 

Guji is one of the oldest coffee growing regions in the world, in this region holds one of our favorite coffee producing communities - the Koba kebele. Koba houses a processing center where local producers drop off their cherry, which they transport from their farms via horse, mule, or donkey. The farms are between 30 and 90 minutes away along dirt roads.

The farmers of Koba belong to the Oromo people and speak Oromiffa. They maintain certain ancestral customs and have a quiet lifestyle built almost entirely around coffee farming. Children in the area usually don’t start going to school until age 9 because they have to travel long distances to get to the nearest school. Due to this education gap, the majority of young people in the area end up dedicating themselves to agriculture: growing potatoes, coffee, maize, or false banana trees on their parents' or neighbors’ farms. In this culturally rich and humble area, is some of the world's most highly regarded coffee & producers.

This year's lot was Picked and peak ripeness. Floated and sorted for highest density seeds. Depulped and wet fermented for up to 4 days. Dried on raised beds for up to 2 weeks until moisture content is stable.

Ethiopian Landrace varieties are of the most significant & original types of coffee varieties in the world. From these varieties, span the great diversification & unique mutations seen worldwide in all coffee producing countries. Yet still, we keep finding a great affinity for all types of Landraces grown along the equator. This lot is a mix of several varieties grown in the area that many have yet to be genetically mapped. We are looking forward to learning more about all the varieties that Ethiopia and the motherlands of coffee have to offer.
