Farm: La Pradera
Region: Santa María, Huila, Colombia
Altitude: 2,050 Meters Above Sea Level
Process: Washed
Harvest: August 2025
Notes: Floral, Elegant Berries & Wildflower Honey.
A brilliant cup that pops with massive florality, elegant notations of marionberry, merlot grape, lavender, bergamot, passion fruit, black cherry, orange blossom, long finishes of wild honey. This is a top-lot Colombian Gesha, reminiscent of the great Panama Gesha. This coffee will brew brilliantly however filtered or non-filtered. The cup is bright, saturated with berry sweetness and splendidly long on the finish.
Finca La Pradera is located in Santa Maria, Huila, Colombia, and is managed by Luis Enrique Cuellar and his brother Robinson. The farm consists of 6 hectares of land, with 3.5 hectares dedicated to growing coffee, sits at an elevation of 2,050 Meters and has around 13,000 coffee trees in production, with varieties ranging from Caturra and Pacamara to the more exotic Pink Bourbon, Chiroso & Gesha varieties.
Upon arriving at the wet-mill, the cherries are left to ferment for 24 hours, after which they are floated to remove under/over-ripes and then de-pulped and left to ferment, and dry for another 48-52 hours. Upon washing (in which they leave a little bit of mucilage), the coffee is dried in a traditional greenhouse structure for anywhere from 18-25 days, depending on the weather.
Luis Enrique is an agronomist by trade and manages the plots and commercializing of the coffee, while Robinson manages the processing and drying, complementing each other with their individual strengths. They aim to plant exotic landrace varieties and advance their bio-dynamic practices to elevate their professional enterprise. In years past, when there was less production, the picking was a family affair. However, with the trees now as adults, they hire pickers, but they are paid wages far above the average (over 40% of the avg.) to ensure only ripe cherries are selected.
Gesha has been identified as a Landrace variety from the Gori Gesha forests of Ethiopia. It made its way through research labs to Central America in the 1950's. It is not clear if the Gesha varieties we are seeing so prevalently on the market are of the famed Panama Gesha T2722 lineage. There are certainly similarities but it would not be a stretch to say there are plenty of Gesha mutations being cultivated all over Latin and Central America. This particular lot from Robinson and Luis is the closest we have tasted to the T2722 Gesha profile out of Colombia.
