The Oaxacan region has proven to show great potential for many years now. Coffee production has been intermittent & few with great quality lots, finding a gem like Herbal's small outturn is truly special. This is a clean and comforting style coffee. Mr. Garcia's garden is mostly made up of Typica, we get to experience this variety in the Oaxacan fashion. In the cup we get notes of dried berries, cherry, creamy sweetness, compote and apples. The acidity is subdued, there is an cashew butter creaminess about the profile that is clean and approachable.

Herbal Garcia is a second-generation coffee producer from the localidad of San José Vista Hermosa, in the Sierra Mazateca or Norte of Oaxaca, and is part of the municipality of San Lucas de Zoquiápam, specifically in the Sierra de Flores Magón region. Herbal is fairly new to coffee cultivation. He was a school teacher until about four years ago, when his father passed away, and he inherited several plots of coffee. That same year, he planted a new plot of Marsellesa trees in addition to the 15-year-old Typica trees his father left him.

Today, he and his wife, Elizabeth, work the land together, carrying out all coffee chores, including pruning, weeding, and harvesting, the latter of which they employ other family members to help out with. They process their coffee together and hope that their 11-year-old son, Archivaldo, carries on the family legacy.

Typica is on the most important coffee varieties in the genetic lineage of Coffea Arabica. One of the original greats descending from Ethiopia. Typica was eventually distributed throughout the world and started it's journey out of Southwest Ethiopia as early as the 1500's. It is now found in the most remote areas worldwide as a staple and standard of coffee cultivation. Although this coffee is susceptible to coffee leaf rust, it is well loved for it's cup quality. Marsellas is a high yielding cup with relatively high acidity in the cup. It is a cross of high pedigree Timor Hybrid & Villa Sarchi. This variety has been well adapted to medium-high altitudes and produces a good amount of quality cherry. It has been distributed well among Latin America.
