Homasho Borena

Variety: Ethiopian Landraces

Region: Sidama, Ethiopia

Elevation: 2,300 - 2,400 MASL

Process: Fully Washed

Harvest: January 2026

This is a clean and easy-drinking cup for the Homasho coffee outturn. The small community that produces this lot have executed all processing steps perfectly. This coffee is elegantly sweet, subtle on the acidity & yet lively with a cascara-tea-like texture. In the cup we get notes of black tea, poppy, dried berries, licorice  with a structured minerality. This is a well pronounced and brilliant coffee with a very approachable acidity and sweetness affable for all kinds of tastes and preferences.

The Hamasho Borena lot comes from Hamasho Washing Station, owned and managed by Asefa Dukamo Korma, it sits nestled in the Bombe Mountains of Sidama Bensa, Ethiopia, near the Oromia border. The station serves 161 smallholder farmers from the villages of Bombe Chilaka, Hamasho kebele (Hamasho Borena) and Keramo. Their farms sit at one of the highest elevations for coffee in Ethiopia… 2,300 to 2,400+ meters up on rich volcanic soil, where the primary variety is JARC 74158, along with other JARC varieties like 74112 and 74110. Hamasho Borena’s extreme elevation, combined with the sunny climate, volcanic soils, and dense vegetation of the Bombe mountain range, creates a microclimate unlike any other. Cool nights and moderate daytime temperatures allow cherries to develop slowly, concentrating sugars and increasing density.

For this Washed lot, ripe cherries are hand‑picked by farmers and delivered to the Hamasho Station, where they are floated and sorted for density and defects. The cherries are depulped and then go through a barrel fermentation for 72 hours, before being washed with abundant water. The parchment is the laid to dry on raised beds for 10-13 days, with continuous moisture checks throughout the day.

Ethiopian Landrace varieties are of the most significant & original types of coffee varieties in the world. From these varieties, span the great diversification & unique mutations seen worldwide in all coffee producing countries. Yet still, we keep finding a great affinity for all types of Landraces grown along the equator. This lot is a mix of several varieties grown in the area that many have yet to be genetically mapped. We are looking forward to learning more about all the varieties that Ethiopia and the motherlands of coffee have to offer.

Our coffees are best after two weeks++ of the roast date.
