This is a big bodied and well rounded lot fromt the community of Gichatha-ini. This cup is so juicy and sweet, the acidity is hitting at a mid-range which leaves room for the sugary-fullness to sink into the palate. In the cup I get notes of vanilla, mango, clean and ripe orange. Bright upfront and sweet and syrupy at times even, this cup has a charming and bright character that can't be missed.
This lot of AA grade selection is from the Gichatha-ini wet mill in Nyeri. They have been an outstanding cooperative for years. Like most of the region, the farmer members of Gichatha-ini work very small plots of land. Many have less than one hectare of land, and the preferred cultivars are SL-28, and SL-34 Bourbon selections, known for good cup quality, especially when growing conditions are favorable. This region has very good altitude, starting at 1900 meters above sea level, and topping out around 2000 meters.
In Kenya, the farmers separate lots by seed/screen size. This lot is an AA separation, being the biggest screen size (.3in/8mm) separation accepted. Kenyan coffee has a multitude of varieties being grown country-wide. Most commonly identified varieties have been selections from the field that have proven to yield optimal results. These varieties include SL-28, SL-34, Ruiru 11 & Batian.
